The mission — and what it signals

“Educating physicians dedicated to serving the needs of rural Minnesota and Native American communities.”University of Minnesota Medical School, on the Duluth mission2 · rural & Native health

Minnesota's identity runs through its three-campus structure and, especially, its Duluth mission for rural and Native American health. Duluth recently expanded from a two-year to a four-year program. For an applicant, the signal is mission fit — rural, Indigenous-health, or primary-care commitment reads as a strong match, particularly for the Duluth campus.

Curriculum & distinctive programs

Minnesota's program is defined by geography and mission:

If your story points toward rural, Indigenous, or primary-care medicine, Minnesota — and Duluth in particular — is built for exactly that.

How Minnesota reviews applicants

Minnesota does not publish an entering-class GPA or a real MCAT score — no average, median, or range.1 The only score figure it states is a minimum MCAT of 500 to advance.5 Minnesota does not publish a class size. Importantly, Minnesota requires the AAMC PREview exam — build it into your plan.1

The interview

The format differs by campus. Twin Cities uses a virtual Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) — up to eight stations in Zoom breakout rooms.3 Duluth uses a traditional interview with two members of its admissions committee.4 Prepare for the format of the campus you're interviewing with, and confirm the current structure on the official page.

Secondaries

Minnesota reviews for mission fit, so make yours concrete: rural or Native American health, primary care, ties to Minnesota. Vague altruism reads as filler; a specific, lived reason reads as fit — especially for Duluth.

Timeline & cost

Apply through AMCAS, complete the AAMC PREview (required) and the Minnesota secondary, and expect campus-specific interviews across a September–February season. Plan the PREview early so it doesn't hold up your file.

Tuition: per the 2026–27 MD student budget, first-year resident tuition and fees are about $34,136 (fall/spring) plus a summer term, and non-resident about $51,122 plus summer; tuition is fixed for four years after enrollment.6

What Minnesota seems to value — an honest read

Mission fit, and a required PREview.

Minnesota doesn't publish stat averages — it reviews holistically for mission fit and requires the PREview readiness exam, an unusual signal about what it values. With a nationally known rural and Native American health mission, it reads for people whose stories point that way — a judgment about fit, not a prediction of admission. We publish no odds.

Frequently asked

What GPA and MCAT does Minnesota require?

Minnesota publishes no class-average GPA or MCAT (no average, median, or range) — only a minimum MCAT of 500 to advance. Because it publishes no class-stat profile, we don't display GPA/MCAT numbers that would misrepresent those floors.1

Does Minnesota require the AAMC PREview or CASPer?

Minnesota requires the AAMC PREview professional-readiness exam (valid within three years). CASPer is not mentioned on its admissions pages as reviewed. Build the PREview into your timeline.1

How many campuses does Minnesota have?

One school across three campuses — Twin Cities (the main MD program), Duluth (rural / Native American mission, now four years), and a St. Cloud regional campus.

What is the interview format?

It depends on the campus: Twin Cities uses a virtual Multiple Mini-Interview (up to eight Zoom stations); Duluth uses a traditional interview with two admissions-committee members.3

Minnesota publishes no entering-class GPA or real MCAT average, median, or range; the only score figures it states are a minimum MCAT of 500 to advance, which is a floor, not a typical value. We therefore show no stat card of class averages. The AAMC PREview exam is required. Tuition figures are 2026-27 and exclude living costs. No acceptance rate or admission odds are shown, by policy.
