Getting into Tufts University School of Medicine

Tufts is a private Boston medical school with a mission stated in plain terms: train physicians who make a sustained positive impact on the health of individuals, communities, and the world. Two of its named programs make that concrete in a way most schools can't match. Here's an honest, physician-reviewed look at what Tufts publishes and what it values. No admission odds — just verified facts and how to read them.

What is Tufts' mission — and what does it signal?

Train physicians who make a sustained positive impact on the health of individuals, communities, and the world.Tufts University School of Medicine official mission1

Tufts reads for service, community, global health, and health justice — and that's not a vague aspiration here, it's operationalized in named programs. That's the meaningful difference between a school that lists values and one that has built structures around them. Applicants who show sustained commitment to communities and health equity align most naturally, and "sustained" is doing real work in that sentence: a year of consistent involvement reads very differently from a summer of it.

What makes Tufts' curriculum distinctive?

Two distinctive tracks set Tufts apart:

Naming the specific track that fits you, and why, is one of the strongest "why Tufts" moves available — precisely because these programs are unique to the school and can't be swapped into another application.1 Confirm current eligibility and mechanics on Tufts' official pages, since track requirements can differ from the general MD pathway.

Tufts' most distinctive pathway is the Maine Track, run with MaineHealth. Of the 204 students in the Class of 2030, 41 are on the Maine Track and 163 on the Boston track; the class also includes 21 MD/MPH, 4 MD/PhD, and 1 MD/MA students — Tufts' published counts, not rates.1 Admission to the Maine Track is jointly selected by Tufts and MaineHealth, and Maine Track applicants are reviewed for both the Maine Track and the traditional track; their interviews are with Maine Medical Center faculty in Portland.6 Students begin the first year in Boston and move to Maine for most of the rest of training. Incoming Maine Track students may be considered for a $25,000 scholarship (up to 20 per class, on criteria set by a Maine-based committee).6

How does Tufts review applicants?

Review is holistic and mission-driven — demonstrated service, community engagement, and interest in health justice are weighed alongside the metrics rather than as a tiebreaker after them. The 3.84/514 are averages, not cutoffs. Neither CASPer nor AAMC PREview is required as of August 2026.2 Requirements shift between cycles, so confirm officially before you build your timeline around it.

Tufts asks for a full year of biology, two years of chemistry including at least one semester each of general and organic (biochemistry is highly recommended and can count toward the two-year total), and a semester of physics. AP credit won't satisfy the physics requirement, though it may apply to general chemistry. Beyond courses, Tufts looks for demonstrated competency — not necessarily coursework — in statistics, spoken and written English, Mendelian genetics and cell/molecular biology, and laboratory skills. Requirements must be finished before enrollment, not necessarily before you apply.7 The MCAT is required: Tufts accepts scores from within five calendar years of enrollment (with a preference for three), considers all scores, and notes your highest total. One timing rule to plan around — your MCAT must come from an exam taken by September to count for that cycle.8

Does Tufts use the MMI — and what is the interview like?

Tufts uses a traditional, two-interviewer, virtual format — not an MMI.2 Depth over reps: two separate conversations where your service and community narrative should come through concretely, with names, places, and specifics rather than categories. Two interviewers also means two independent impressions, so consistency matters — the person you describe in one conversation should be recognizable in the other. Confirm the current format each cycle.

How should I approach Tufts' secondary?

Tufts' secondary is where the health-justice and community threads matter most. If the Maine Track or Health Justice Scholars genuinely fits you, connect real experiences to it rather than gesturing at the program name. Vague "I care about underserved communities" lines underperform badly here — nearly every applicant writes one. Specificity about your work and Tufts' programs is the edge. Tufts runs on the standard AMCAS cycle, so submit early and track its deadlines.

When are Tufts' deadlines, and does Tufts screen before the secondary?

Tufts wants the full AMCAS application, including transcripts, complete by November 1, and it doesn't grant extensions.3 There's no pre-secondary cut — Tufts doesn't disqualify anyone at this stage, so every applicant can complete the secondary, which is due (with letters) December 30 for a $130 fee that's waived for anyone who received an AMCAS fee waiver.3 Interviews run September through March on a rolling basis; the Admissions Committee meets monthly and admits on a rolling basis from October through April. Every applicant gets either an interview invitation or a letter of regret by March 31, and waitlist offers go out May–July.3 (2026–27 cycle; confirm on Tufts' page.)

Does Tufts offer Early Decision or an Early Assurance Program?

Early Decision is open only to MD applicants (not MD/PhD), and you apply only to Tufts: AMCAS complete by August 1, the Tufts secondary by September 1, interviews in September, and a decision by October 1 — admitted, or released to apply elsewhere.4 Early Assurance is for current sophomores: Tufts University sophomores for the traditional MD track, plus a separate Maine Track Early Assurance Program for sophomores at Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, and any University of Maine campus (Maine-college students are eligible only for the Maine Track version).45 Published eligibility includes a cumulative total and science GPA of at least 3.7, and — for conditional acceptances made in or after 2027–28 — a minimum 510 MCAT.5 These are narrow, published eligibility rules for specific undergraduate populations, not an easier route or better odds; most applicants aren't eligible.

How much does Tufts cost?

For 2026–2027, tuition is $69,036 for the year — the same for in-state and out-of-state students, as a private school.2 That's tuition only: it excludes fees, health insurance, books, equipment, and living expenses, and Boston is expensive, so budget a full cost of attendance well above the tuition line. Confirm the current figure on Tufts' official cost and financial-aid pages before you apply.

Who Tufts tends to fit

Tufts tends to fit applicants whose service or health-equity work is real and sustained — the kind of record its Health Justice Scholars community is built around. It fits people with genuine interest in rural and community medicine, especially those with ties to Maine drawn to the Maine Track, and applicants with a public-health orientation, since MD/MPH is one of Tufts' larger published cohorts. It fits students comfortable in an expensive private program in Boston, where tuition is the same for in- and out-of-state students. Most of all, it fits people who can connect specific experiences to a specific Tufts pathway. As always, "fit" is about where your story lands — not your odds, which we don't predict.

What Tufts seems to value — an honest read

Physicians who show up for communities.

Tufts' own language and its named programs point the same direction. If your story runs through service, equity work, or rural and community medicine, Tufts is an unusually good fit — and the Maine Track and Health Justice Scholars give you a concrete hook most applicants never use well. If service isn't a real part of your file, that's worth being honest with yourself about before you apply, because a mission-driven committee is unusually good at spotting the difference between commitment and coverage. This is our read of Tufts' own materials, not a prediction of admission.

Frequently asked

What GPA and MCAT does Tufts look for?

Its Class of 2030 averaged a 3.84 cumulative GPA, a 3.80 science GPA, and a 514 MCAT — averages, not minimums.

What is the Maine Track?

A joint Tufts–MaineHealth program. Maine Track applicants are reviewed for both the Maine Track and the traditional track, and Maine Track students train mostly in Maine after a first year in Boston.

Does Tufts use an MMI?

No — two traditional virtual interviews with separate interviewers. Confirm the current format on Tufts' official page each cycle.

Does Tufts have an Early Assurance Program or Early Decision?

Yes — Early Decision for MD applicants who apply only to Tufts, and an Early Assurance Program for sophomores (Tufts students, plus a Maine Track version for Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, and University of Maine sophomores). Both are narrow-eligibility programs, not easier routes.

How much is tuition at Tufts School of Medicine?

For 2026–2027, tuition is $69,036 for the year — the same for in-state and out-of-state students. That's tuition only; your full cost of attendance in Boston will be higher.

What is Tufts' medical school acceptance rate?

We don't show or estimate acceptance rates, by policy. What Tufts publishes is more useful for planning: its class profile (published means, a class of 204 from 31 states), a secondary every applicant may complete, and an interview season that runs September–March.

Does Tufts screen applicants before the secondary?

No. Tufts doesn't disqualify anyone before the secondary — every applicant can complete it, and it's due December 30.
